Choosing an earth-friendly holiday

Earthship Rental Holiday

I had the opportunity of staying in one of these extraordinary fully sustainable houses, the only one for rent outside USA. We experienced living 'bills free' whilst enjoying the beautiful French countryside. There were plenty of outdoor activities on offer, beaches were just over an hour away and the magnificent Mont Saint Michel was easily visited on a day trip. We enjoyed good local food, summer festivals and slower living all only an hour and a half from the ports.

Location of the holiday

Normandy, France

When did/will you go?

How did/would you get there and back?

Can be done on public transport. Efficient direct trains 2 1/2 hours from Paris, then bus link to Mortain (10km away) but unfortunately no local buses from there. However, a keen cyclist could do it as disused train tracks spread for miles in the area and connect the major towns.

What was/is ethical about this holiday?

No mains services were required. The house is passive in design, so needs no power to heat or cool it (only a woodburner on extremely cold days), all electricity is generated on site through solar panels and a solar thermal panel heats the water, rain is harvested off the roof and treated with a sophisticated filtration system, sewage is treated on site and food is produced in the greenhouse!

What was/is the best thing about this holiday?

Connection to nature as the glass front makes you feel like you are living outside. It feels very reassuring to know that you are in control of all your needs on site and is in a very quiet and relaxing place.

Additional Notes

It is particularly good for getting ideas about sustainable living as it is a hotbed of design and innovation. Details can be found at
