Choosing an earth-friendly holiday

Chilling Weekend in Zurich

A weekend in Zurich in February to visit the art galleries there, eat cake and discover a new city.

Location of the holiday

Zurich, Switzerland

When did/will you go?

February 2008

How did/would you get there and back?

Train from Brighton to London St Pancras International, glass of champagne at the bar and then off by Eurostar to Paris Gare du Nord. Walk across to Gare de L'Est, and from there a direct train to Zurich. The connection between Paris and Zurich was booked via Rail Europe.

What was/is ethical about this holiday?

All travel was by train, and the hotel was a locally run hotel.

What was/is the best thing about this holiday?

Zurich is a fabulously laid back city, with two fantastic vegetarian restaurants (personal preference) and two of the most fabulous cake shops in Europe. The tram system is very easy to master, and the entire population seems to be fluent in every known European language. Even the frozen lake and icy hills lend the city a sense of mystery.

Anything you would have done differently?

While there are issues with the current carbon production associated with TGV High Speed trains, the transfer of journeys to cross channel trains from flights is still a progressive move as it indicates that the growth of air traffic can be curtailed.
